Veteran education chapters

Chapter 30: Montgomery GI Bill®

The Montgomery GI Bill® is an education benefit paid directly to you, the student. To be eligible, you need to have entered active duty for the first time after June 30, 1985. You must have over 3 years of active duty service, or 2 years of active duty plus 4 years as a reservist.

Chapter 31: Vocational Rehabilitation

If eligible, a counselor can approve you for vocational rehabilitation training. To be eligible, you must have a service-connected disability of at least 10%. Vocational rehabilitation expires 12 years from the last date of separation from active military service, or from the date the veteran was first notified by the VA of a service-connected disability rating.

Chapter 35: Dependents Educational Assistance (DEA)

Chapter 35 is an education benefit paid directly to the student. Educational assistance is paid to dependents and spouses of veterans who have a service-connected permanent and total disability, or who died as a result of a service connection (including children and spouses). Chapter 35 benefits expire at 8 years for children (who must be between the ages of 18 and 26) and 10 years for spouses.

Chapter 1606: Montgomery GI Bill® (MGIB-SR)

The Montgomery GI Bill® SR (Chapter 1606) is available to members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Reserves, as well as the National Guard. Eligibility requires a 6-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve. Chapter 1606 benefits expire on the day you leave the Selected Reserve.

Chapter 1607: Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP)

REAP (Chapter 1607) is a Department of Defense and VA education benefit program designed to provide educational assistance to members of the Reserve components called or ordered to active duty for at least 90 days after September 11, 2001. Basic eligibility requires that members of the Selected Reserve be called to active duty, and that members of the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) be called to active duty. Chapter 1607 benefits expire 10 years from the separation date if separated after completing the service contract and the discharge is not dishonorable.

Chapter 33: Post-9/11 GI Bill®

Basic eligibility for Chapter 33 benefits includes service on active duty after September 10, 2001, a minimum of 90 aggregated days (excluding entry-level and skill-training days), or a period of at least 30 days followed by a disability discharge. The Post-9/11 GI Bill® may provide:

  1. Tuition and fees paid directly to the school
  2. A monthly housing allowance (MHA)
  3. An annual books and supplies stipend
  4. A one-time rural benefit payment
